FOSTER! - Could you care for an abandoned senior dog for 2 to 12 weeks? This would involve giving gentle attention to a dog who might have special needs and might at first be confused or frightened, evaluating that dog's temperament, and helping us select the right adopter. The more homes we have available, the more dogs we can help! Contact us if you might be interested; you may download the foster/final refuge home information package HERE. Please include a note about your particular interests and situation.

Provide a FINAL REFUGE! Could you provide long-term care to one of the oldest dogs? Many of the dogs needing our help are too old for normal adoption, perhaps in the last months or year of their lives or in fragile health. We take in as many as we can but have to say no when space is full. If you could provide the TLC to the end of the dog's life we could cover veterinary expenses. There is such reward in giving comfort and love to an old creature who really needs it. If you might have room in your heart and home to do this, please contact us. (Download the application form HERE.)

Foster and Final Refuge care: how are they different?
OldDog Haven is able to care for senior dogs by using Foster and Final Refuge homes. Foster families provide much-needed loving care to adoptable senior dogs rescued from animal shelters and from owners who can no longer care for them. Foster families will care for the dog for 2 to 12 weeks, until he is adopted.
It is important to keep in mind that these senior dogs are loving companions but may have medical issues undiagnosed when they are placed in foster care. We try to evaluate the dog's health before we make the decision to send him to a foster family, but it is possible that a dog in foster care may not be adoptable after all, and may even die in your care. It is sad when an older dog has an illness that we cannot cure, but it is such a wonderful thing to give an old dog the loving home that they so deserve for their final days.
Final Refuge care is for dogs who are too old or medically fragile for normal adoption and need a safe loving home in the last months or year of their lives. This home will provide a loving final refuge and keep the dogs comfortable and safe so they do not have to spend their last days afraid in a shelter or alone in a backyard. If you can see them through to the end you will find that the rewards outweigh the pain of losing a friend.
